The Dry Needling Diploma Program is an advanced professional clinical diploma developed by the International Physical Therapy Academy (IPTA) for physiotherapy graduates seeking a higher-level, longitudinal pathway in dry needling practice. The program is based on the IPTA Dry Needling Certification Program content, but is expanded into a two-semester clinical diploma structure to provide deeper theory, longer supervised learning, stronger clinical reasoning, case portfolio development, evidence appraisal, safety governance, and preparation for future trainer development pathways.

 

Delivered over two academic-style semesters of three months each, the program combines online learning, live academic sessions, self-study, case-based clinical assignments, evidence-based discussions, and a mandatory four-day intensive face-to-face practical lab. The practical component retains the core hands-on structure of the established certification program, including supervised needling across the upper limb, lower limb, head and neck, chest, cervical region, and back, while the extended diploma format gives participants additional time to consolidate knowledge, document clinical cases, develop professional confidence, and prepare for advanced clinical leadership in dry needling.

 

The program is designed as a professional clinical diploma, not merely a short course. Graduates earn the Clinical Diploma in Dry Needling Practice (Dip.DN) credential and are positioned to present a higher professional designation in clinical practice, subject to local regulatory rules. High-performing graduates may also become eligible to apply for IPTA / IDNB tutor-development or mentor-development pathways, subject to additional experience, observation, teaching, and accreditation requirements.

The Dry Needling Diploma Program is a six-month advanced clinical pathway that transforms the core dry needling certification curriculum into a deeper diploma-level professional program. It is designed for physiotherapists who require more than an introductory or short-course qualification and who wish to develop a stronger professional identity as clinical dry needling practitioners.

 

The program follows a two-semester structure. Semester 1 develops the scientific foundations, anatomy, safety, trigger point theory, dry needling mechanisms, clinical indications, contraindications, and regional technique preparation. It culminates in a four-day intensive practical lab covering the same essential regional needling competencies found in the IPTA Dry Needling Certification Program. Semester 2 expands the learner into advanced clinical integration, case-based reasoning, evidence appraisal, patient selection, documentation, complication prevention, clinical governance, and trainer-readiness foundations.

 

Assessment is multi-modal and includes online examinations, practical OSCE assessment, clinical case portfolio, article criticism, safety documentation, reflective learning, and a final clinical viva or capstone presentation. Graduates receive a QR-verified IPTA Electronic Diploma Certificate and may use the Dip.DN designation in accordance with local professional regulations.

The Dry Needling Diploma Program addresses this need by extending the established certification content into a six-month clinical diploma. 08. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

Minimum Qualification: Physiotherapy degree - graduates only.

Professional Status: Active physiotherapy registration is recommended and may be required depending on local regulations.

Student Eligibility: Current physiotherapy students are not eligible.

Prior Dry Needling Experience: Not mandatory, but previous exposure to musculoskeletal physiotherapy is beneficial.

Language Proficiency: English - translation support may be provided where local arrangements permit.

Technical Requirements: Stable internet connection and device access to the IPTA e-learning platform.

Scope of Practice: Participants are responsible for confirming that dry needling is permitted within their professional scope of practice in their jurisdiction.

09. PARTICIPANT PREPARATION

 

Before the Practical Lab

 

Participants must complete Semester 1 online learning requirements before attending the face-to-face practical lab. This includes dry needling foundations, anatomy, safety, contraindications, patient selection, and pre-lab safety assessments. Participants must complete all required declarations, including informed consent, ethics, and safety agreements.

- Single-use sterile dry needling needles of varied lengths with guide tubes.

- Alcohol swabs and approved skin preparation materials.

- Disposable gloves, hand gel, gauze or cotton balls, plasters, and appropriate sharps disposal arrangements.

- Lab coat or scrubs for all practical sessions.

- Notebook or tablet for case documentation and reflective learning.

- Any additional materials specified by the program tutor before the practical lab.

11. FACULTY & TUTORS

 

All IPTA program tutors must hold valid IPTA Tutor Accreditation and dry needling specialty recognition. Tutors involved in practical delivery must have appropriate dry needling teaching competence and IDNB-aligned safety credentials.

 

Program Tutor: To be confirmed per intake.

Required Specialty: Dry Needling, Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Pain Management or Sports Physiotherapy.

Tutor Status: IPTA Certified Tutor / IDNB Certified Mentor or equivalent specialty recognition.

12. ASSESSMENT & CERTIFICATION

 

Assessment Strategy

 

The Dry Needling Diploma Program uses a multi-modal, competency-based assessment system. The assessment framework is designed to evaluate knowledge, safety awareness, clinical reasoning, practical technique, evidence-based practice, documentation, and professional readiness.

 

Assessment Components

 

1. Online Foundation Examination

 

Assesses dry needling theory, anatomy, neurophysiology, pain mechanisms, trigger point theory, safety, contraindications, and clinical precautions.

Pass mark: 70%.

 

2. Anatomy and Safety Assessment

 

Assesses surface anatomy, risk structures, safe region selection, adverse event prevention, consent, infection control, and sharps safety.

Pass mark: 70%.

 

3. Practical OSCE

 

Conducted during the four-day practical lab. Assesses needle handling, anatomical landmarking, patient positioning, safety, technique quality, communication, and professional conduct.

Pass mark: 70%.

 

4. Clinical Case Portfolio

 

Participants submit a minimum of 10 de-identified cases or approved simulated cases. The portfolio must demonstrate clinical reasoning, consent, treatment planning, outcomes, reflection, and integration with physiotherapy care.

Pass mark: 70%.

 

5. Article Criticism

 

Participants critically appraise one relevant dry needling research article and explain its clinical implications.

Pass mark: 70%.

 

6. Micro-Teaching / Trainer-Readiness Presentation

 

Participants deliver a short teaching presentation or demonstration. This does not grant teaching authority, but supports readiness for future tutor-development pathways.

Pass mark: 70%.

 

7. Final Viva / Capstone Presentation

 

Participants present selected portfolio cases and defend their clinical reasoning, safety decisions, and evidence-based approach.

Pass mark: 70%.

 

Pass Mark

 

A minimum of 70% is required in each summative assessment component. All required components must be passed independently to receive the Clinical Diploma in Dry Needling Practice (Dip.DN).

 

Attendance Requirement

 

- 100% attendance is required for the four-day practical lab.

- Minimum 80% attendance or completion is required for online live sessions and academic activities.

Re-Assessment Policy

 

- One theory examination re-sit is available within 60 days.

- Practical OSCE re-assessment is available at an upcoming IPTA-approved practical lab or through another approved assessment route where appropriate.

- Portfolio revision may be permitted once following tutor feedback.

- Micro-teaching or viva re-assessment may be scheduled online or face to face.

- All re-assessments must be completed within 6 months of the original program end date.

- Administration fees may apply according to IPTA policy.

Program Review Cycle: Every 3 years, or sooner if significant new evidence or guideline changes warrant earlier revision.

Peer Review Process: The program is reviewed by independent subject-matter experts in dry needling, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, pain science, and clinical education.

Delivery Monitoring: IPTA Liaison Officers and the Review Committee monitor delivery quality through tutor evaluations, participant feedback, portfolio review, and assessment outcome analysis.

Participant Feedback: Structured participant feedback is collected at the end of each semester and at program completion.

Assessment Moderation: Summative assessments are moderated by a second IPTA-accredited assessor before final results are issued.

Tutor Qualification: Practical tutors must hold current IPTA Tutor Accreditation and dry needling specialty recognition.

15. ETHICS & PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT

 

All participants, faculty, and program organizers are required to adhere to IPTA's ethical and professional conduct standards throughout the program.

 

- Participants complete the IPTA Code of Ethics declaration before program commencement.

- Faculty members submit conflict of interest disclosures before program delivery.

- Formal informed consent is obtained before all practical needling sessions.

- Participants retain the right to decline needling on specific body regions during training.

- Safety briefings are conducted before every practical lab session.

- Sterile technique, sharps safety, adverse event prevention, and emergency response are mandatory components of practical training.

- The program respects cultural sensitivity, privacy, and participant dignity in all practical lab settings.

- Data protection and privacy compliance is maintained in accordance with applicable regulations in the host country.
