The Functional & Sports Taping Certification Program (FSTCP) is a focused, hands-on certification developed by the International Physical Therapy Academy (IPTA) that equips physiotherapists and healthcare professionals with comprehensive practical proficiency in the two foundational taping modalities used in contemporary clinical and sports practice: kinesiology taping and rigid sports taping. Delivered in a hybrid format — with structured online pre-program learning followed by three intensive face-to-face days — the program covers the theoretical foundations, neurophysiological mechanisms, clinical indications, contraindications, and evidence base of both taping systems, alongside supervised hands-on application across all major body regions. Participants master kinesiology taping techniques — including lymphatic, fascial, space, mechanical, ligament, and functional correction applications — and rigid taping techniques — including protective, supportive, and functional taping for the ankle, knee, shoulder, wrist, and other regions. The program integrates clinical reasoning for taping selection, skin assessment and management, taping in sports and rehabilitation contexts, and return-to-activity planning. The FSTCP is accredited by IPTA and the International Physical Therapy Network (IPTN), and carries 30 IPTA-accredited CPD hours. The kinesiology taping track covers all six application techniques — space, lymphatic, fascial, mechanical, ligament, and functional correction — applied across the shoulder, elbow, wrist, lumbar spine, hip, knee, and ankle. The rigid taping track covers protective, supportive, and functional rigid taping applications for the ankle (stirrup, heel lock, basket weave), knee (patellofemoral, collateral support), shoulder (AC joint, glenohumeral), and wrist/thumb. Day 3 culminates in an integration module covering combined taping strategies, clinical decision-making, taping in sport vs. rehabilitation contexts, skin management, and a final practical assessment. A structured online pre-program component ensures all participants enter Day 1 with the foundational anatomy, evidence base, and material knowledge required for immediate hands-on practice.

Taping is one of the most widely used interventions in sports physiotherapy, musculoskeletal practice, and rehabilitation worldwide. Both kinesiology taping and rigid sports taping have distinct evidence bases, application philosophies, and clinical indications — yet many physiotherapists in practice apply only one modality, or apply both without formal, systematic training. This creates inconsistency in clinical outcomes, incorrect technique application, adverse skin reactions, and missed opportunities for optimal patient management. The FSTCP addresses this gap by providing a single, structured, internationally accredited program that develops dual competency in both taping systems, equipping practitioners with the clinical reasoning to select, apply, and integrate each modality appropriately across a broad range of musculoskeletal, sports, and rehabilitation presentations.
Why "Functional & Sports Taping" — A Note on Terminology

The title "Functional & Sports Taping" was selected deliberately over "Medical Taping" to reflect the evidence-based scope and international terminology of both modalities covered. "Functional taping" encompasses all applications designed to modify movement, support tissue, or influence neuromuscular function — including kinesiology taping and rigid taping — and is the terminology recognized across international sports medicine, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation guidelines. "Medical taping" is a jurisdiction-specific term that carries variable prescriptive and regulatory implications across different countries. The FSTCP title ensures internationally consistent understanding of the program's scope, regardless of where it is delivered.

Minimum Qualification: Physiotherapy degree or allied health graduate qualification — Graduates Only. Current students are not eligible.
Prerequisites: No prior taping experience required. Completion of all online pre-program modules (M0-A to M0-C) and passing the pre-program online examination (≥70%) before Day 1 is mandatory.
License / Registration: Active professional registration recommended; participants are responsible for confirming taping is within their scope of practice in their jurisdiction
Language Proficiency: English — translation support available where local arrangements permit
Experience Preferred: No prior taping experience required — program is designed to develop competency from a foundation level through to certification
Technical Requirements: Stable internet connection and device with access to IPTA e-learning platform for online pre-program component

All participants must complete the three online pre-program modules (M0-A through M0-C) totalling 5 hours of structured self-study before attending Day 1. These modules cover applied anatomy for taping, the foundations and evidence base of both kinesiology and rigid taping, material properties, skin assessment, and contraindications. Access to the IPTA e-learning platform is provided upon enrollment, at least two weeks before the first face-to-face day. A pre-program online examination (MCQ format, ≥70% required) must be passed before Day 1 attendance is permitted.
Required Taping Materials — Participants Must Bring (Personal Supply)

Taping materials are personal and must be brought by each participant for all three days of the program. Exact quantities will be confirmed by the program tutor at least one week before commencement. The following is a standard guide:
Kinesiology Tape (bring for Days 1–3)

· Kinesiology tape rolls — minimum 3 rolls (5 cm × 5 m each) in a preferred colour. Water-resistant, 100% cotton or cotton-blend preferred. Approximate total: 15 metres for 3 days of practice.
· Pre-cut kinesiology tape strips are acceptable for specific techniques but rolls are recommended for full flexibility of application.
Rigid Taping Materials (bring for Days 2–3)

· Zinc oxide rigid tape — minimum: 2 rolls of 25mm × 13.7m + 2 rolls of 38mm × 13.7m + 1 roll of 50mm × 13.7m.
· Pre-wrap / foam underwrap — minimum 4 rolls (7 cm × 27 m).
· Cohesive or elastic adhesive bandage (e.g. Elastoplast or Co-Flex) — 1–2 rolls (7.5 cm × 4.5 m) for finishing techniques.

· Hypoallergenic skin preparation spray or wipes (e.g. benzoin tincture spray or Mueller TuffSkin) — 1 small bottle per participant.
· Skin protection wipes or tape remover (e.g. adhesive remover wipes) for comfortable tape removal.
· Comfortable clinical attire for all three days — shorts and vest / sleeveless top or equivalent to allow full access to all body regions being taped. Lab coat or scrubs for opening theory sessions.
· Notebook or tablet for case presentation and documentation exercises.
Note: All participants will be practicing taping techniques on fellow participants throughout the program. Comfortable attire allowing full access to the lower limbs, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and spine is essential. All participants consent to receiving tape application and agree to the pre-program consent and skin assessment declaration before Day 1.

Assessment Strategy

The FSTCP uses a competency-based assessment framework combining a pre-program online knowledge examination, continuous in-session practical skills checklists, group clinical case presentations on Day 3, and a final two-station practical OSCE on Day 3. The assessment is designed to evaluate knowledge of both taping systems, clinical reasoning in taping selection, and hands-on technique precision and safety.

Conducted online before Day 1. Assesses foundational knowledge of applied anatomy, taping material properties, mechanisms of kinesiology and rigid taping, indications, contraindications, skin assessment, and safety principles. MCQ format. Pass mark: 70%. Must be passed before attending Day 1.
Formative Assessment — Skills Checklists (Ongoing — Days 1–3)

Structured skills checklists completed by the tutor for each participant after each major practical module. Tutors provide immediate, direct feedback on anchor placement, tension calibration, tape direction, recoil, and overall application quality. Results are developmental and identify areas for improvement before the final examination.
Group Case Study Presentations (Day 3 — Formative)

Four participant groups present mixed taping clinical case scenarios — selecting and justifying their taping approach for a given clinical presentation, integrating both kinesiology and rigid taping considerations. Presentations develop clinical reasoning and communication skills and are reviewed by the tutor with group discussion.
Final Practical Examination — Two-Station OSCE, Direct Observation (Summative — Day 3)

The final examination consists of two taping stations, each 30 minutes, with direct tutor observation:
· Station 1 — Kinesiology Taping OSCE: Participant is assigned a clinical scenario and body region. They must select the appropriate kinesiology taping application type, justify their choice, perform complete skin preparation, and apply the technique with correct tension, direction, anchor placement, and recoil. Pass mark: 70%.
· Station 2 — Rigid Sports Taping OSCE: Participant is assigned a clinical scenario and body region. They must perform complete pre-wrap preparation and apply the assigned rigid taping technique accurately, with correct layering, tension, and structural support. Pass mark: 70%.

70% in each summative assessment component (pre-program examination, Kinesiology Taping OSCE station, and Rigid Taping OSCE station). All three components must be passed independently to receive the FSTCP credential.
Re-Assessment Policy
------------------------
· One free theory examination re-sit is available within 60 days of the original examination, conducted online proctored or at an IPTA-approved centre.
· Individual OSCE station re-assessment is available — participants who fail only one station are required to repeat only the failed station at an upcoming IPTA program batch or via IPTA-approved video submission within 60 days. An administration fee may apply.
· Candidates unsuccessful after re-assessment may audit relevant day(s) of the next program intake at a reduced fee before re-attempting.
· All re-assessments must be completed within 6 months of the original program end date.

Scientific Oversight: IPTA Scientific Council reviews all program content for scientific accuracy, clinical relevance, and alignment with current taping research and evidence-based practice guidelines.
Program Review Cycle: Every 3 years, or sooner if significant new evidence or changes in taping guidelines and materials warrant earlier revision.
Peer Review Process: Each program is reviewed by at least two independent subject-matter experts in sports physiotherapy and taping prior to initial launch and at each revision cycle.
Delivery Monitoring: IPTA Liaison Officers and the Review Committee monitor program delivery quality through tutor evaluations, participant feedback, and assessment outcome data.
Participant Feedback: A structured feedback survey is administered to all participants at program conclusion. Results are systematically analyzed and fed into the continuous program improvement cycle.
Assessment Moderation: All summative OSCE assessments are moderated by a second IPTA-accredited assessor before results are issued and certificates are dispatched.

14. ETHICS & PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT------------------------------------------------------------------------
All participants, faculty, and program organizers are required to adhere to IPTA's ethical and professional conduct standards throughout the program.
· All participants complete the IPTA Code of Ethics declaration and the program-specific skin assessment and consent declaration prior to Day 1, confirming agreement to receiving tape applications from fellow participants under tutor supervision.
· All faculty members submit conflict of interest disclosures to IPTA Scientific Affairs before each program delivery.
· Informed consent is obtained from all participants before every practical session. Participants retain the right to decline any specific taping application on any body area at any time without consequence to their assessment outcome.
· Skin safety briefings — covering adverse reaction recognition, tape removal protocol, and emergency skin response — are conducted and documented before each practical day.
· The program adheres to IPTA's Equal Opportunity Charter and is committed to diversity and inclusion in all delivery settings. Cultural sensitivity regarding exposed skin, particularly in mixed-gender settings, is addressed in the program orientation and managed respectfully throughout all practical sessions.
